#103 DRINK YOUR HEARTBURN RELIEF

When you have heartburn or indigestion, antacids may provide a little relief in the moment, but over time, they can do more harm than good. Antacids are made from calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide, and/or sodium bicarbonate—bases that neutralize your stomach acid. The theory is that neutralizing your stomach acid will help eliminate the burning and discomfort from heartburn, indigestion, nausea, and upset stomach. While this may work in the short term, it’s not a long-term solution.

Your stomach acid is acidic for good reason. One of its functions is to help break down the food you eat, so antacids can significantly diminish your stomach’s ability to do its job. This can give you a feeling like there’s always a brick in your stomach, since your food is only partially digested.

Stomach acid also helps control the balance of bacteria in your gut by killing off bad bacteria and preventing them from taking over the good bacteria. Decreased stomach acid increases the risk that you’ll develop an intestinal infection. According to researchers who published a study in Gut, antacids give pathogenic bacteria like Clostridium difficile more of a chance to grow.

Instead of taking an antacid next time you get heartburn or indigestion, you can try:

Peppermint, chamomile, fennel, or ginger tea

Warm lemon water

A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in water
